Theatre stayed suppressed in the Protestant colonies in America until the late 18th century. Under English aristocratic influence there was a creeping advance of theatre in America in the s, but it was stopped by anti-theatre legislation in many states when the independence movement set in. The absurd theatre openly rebelled against conventional theatre. It was, as Ionesco called it “anti-theatre.” It was surreal, illogical, conflictless and plotless. The dialogue often seemed to be complete gibberish. And, not surprisingly, the public’s first reaction to this new theatre was incomprehension and rejection.
The first thing to say about Baz Kershaw’s deliberately troublesome book Theatre Ecology is that it claims to steer a similar course for the discipline of Performance Studies.
